The idea of “Soul Mates” is a popular romantic belief in modern culture. A renewed belief in reincarnation has contributed to the idea that our “soul” has lived many lifetimes in many bodies. The idea of having someone who is destined to be our “soul mate” explain why we sometimes “just know” someone and feel instantly connected at first sight. It may also be used to justify why we feel we can’t seem to live without our “soul mate” even if we're unhappy with him/her. You may believe that fate or your higher power has arranged for you to find or not find, that one and only person you will call your “soul mate”. You may feel if you lose that person who is your “soul mate” you will never love again.
I've been a spiritual teacher and psychic life coach for many years and I've found that being locked into the concept of “soul mates” may actually keep some people from finding happiness because what we call being a being a “soul mate” is really about feeling deeply “soul connected” to someone else. A soul connection is the feeling of being unexplainably spiritually or emotionally connected to another person. The understanding of soul connections as a path or clue to finding a “soul mate” creates the potential for love and happiness for someone who is yet to find his or her “soul mate” in immediate attraction. Instead of the classic “love at first sight scenario” a soul connection may reveal itself over time and can be a lovely surprise in life of two people.
Some say that we reincarnate in “soul groups” and that soul connections may also exist with friends and family. Sometimes a soul connection does not mean a romantic relationship, but is a very important part of our life nevertheless. Thinking this way explains why two people can feel so deeply for each other but circumstances means that being together forever just might not be possible or right. If we lose our “soul mate” to death or sad circumstances, than accepting that we may have different deep soul connections with others in this lifetime, allows us to look for love again.
